THE PASSION STORY ACCORDING TO MATTHEW The Passion of Christ has been a source of inspiration for creative minds throughout the centuries, and for painters and composers above all. The Extreme Humility of the incarnate Word, of the Son of God who assumed in his person the whole of humanity without sin, and his voluntary submission to humiliation, to lashing and to death have indeed moved artists. Many different ways and media have been used to depict this critical moment in the history of man at which the human person made the gravest of errors and put to death Life itself, our Creator and Maker. In the byzantine tradition of painting one finds representations of this Divine drama, yet we see that artists were not concerned to record extreme states of the soul and at no time made the emotions of the subjects a central focus. The Gospel accounts were faithfully adhered to -to the extent that in the consciousness of the Church the icon and the Gospel are equal in power and authority- and the main scenes from the Passion were portrayed. These depictions are usually found in cycles of frescoes in churches and more rarely in portable icons. As a rule they follow the fundamental principles of byzantine painting and do not depart from the requirement that the figures be set out clearly before the viewer to whom they must refer. —George Kordis, 2006
