A well illustrated history and description of the icons of the Holy Agiou Pavlou monastery. Agiou Pavlou lies in the southwestern part of the Athos peninsula, and ranks fourteenth in the hierarchy of the Athonite monasteries. Its Katholikon is dedicated to the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. The monastery, founded in the tenth century by St Pavlos Xeropotaminos, is first mentioned in 972, then again in 1269. In the late 14th century its monastic status was restored. Serbian rulers supported the monastery in the 1400s and after 1453 by rulers of Eastern Europe. St Paul’s was partially destroyed many times by attacks on the Holy Mountain. Some of the buildings, including the main Katholikon, have been rebuilt, and all the buildings date from different periods of history. The monastery’s most prized treasures are the portable icon of Virgin the Myrovlitissa (myrrh flowing), fragment of the True Cross and part of the gifts brought to baby Jesus by the Magi.
